Well, it finally happened. I've been noticing my 5-series taking an extra second to crank over the past few weeks, and I kept telling myself I'd sort it out over the weekend. Jump-started it from my neighbor's car and managed to get it running, but the iDrive system threw up about six different warning messages and the steering felt heavy, which I'm guessing is because the battery is so weak that the electronic power steering isn't getting enough juice. Something about needing to register the new battery to the car's computer so the alternator knows how to charge it properly, otherwise you end up with overcharging issues and the battery life gets cut in half. I definitely don't want to take it to just any random garage that'll throw in a cheap battery and not do the proper coding, because I've been burned before by places that claim they know European cars but really don't. Ideally I want someone who stocks genuine BMW batteries or at least a high-quality equivalent like Varta or Bosch, and who can handle the registration process on the spot. I've been driving to work feeling anxious every time I stop at a traffic light, just praying the car doesn't cut out, so I really need to get this sorted as soon as possible. Any recommendations from fellow BMW owners who've had this done recently around that area? I don't mind paying for quality work, I just don't want to end up back at square one in six months because someone cut corners.
